My Contract with Constituents
|
Nigel was the first MP to draw up a contract with his constituents. "This is my contract with constituents to provide all constituents with the best possible service and to pursue any problems with determination as effectively as possible." Nigel acknowledges all letters from constituents and endeavours to secure a speedy response. Nigel acknowledges all emails from constituents raising a problem they face. Nigel holds regular advice sessions and visits elderly, disabled and all other constituents who request a home visit. Nigel maintains an accessible high street office for constituents on one of Edinburgh's busiest bus routes. Nigel produces regular newsletters to supplement this website and keep constituents informed of Nigel's local and Parliamentary activities. Nigel works with local organisations for the good of our community. "All that I ask in return is that my staff are treated at all times with courtesy." If you want to contact our MP in person, tellnigel@parliament.to "I respond promptly to every letter sent to me by my constituents. MPs receive thousands of letters, phonecalls, emails and visits every year, and I am no exception. Last year we sent thousands of letters to constituents – and thousands more to the authorities, taking up their case! I employ three members of staff to assist me in responding immediately to my constituent's letters, phonecalls and emails. My office at 31 Minto Street is on Edinburgh's busiest bus route and is staffed from 9am to 5pm every weekday. My professional staff are real progress-chasers. Other volunteers help with more routine tasks, and I am especially grateful for the tremendous work they do. I live in Edinburgh in the heart of this constituency – the first MP to both live in, and represent this constituency. I have to travel from my home in Edinburgh to London whenever Parliament is sitting. Leaving after Monday's constituency advice session, I almost always return in time for my constituency advice session on Friday. This means around 50 round trips to Parliament a year by train or plane. I hold over 140 advice sessions every year, helping thousands of people."...
