Garvald wins green award
Congratulations to Edinburgh’s Garvald Centre who beat more than 1,400 other UK entrants to scoop a top prize in this year’s annual B&Q ‘You Can Do It’ Awards. The Centre provides opportunities and support to 120 people with learning and physical disabilities and mental illnesses. Garvald is in the final stages of refurbishing and equipping a former school building which will house a range of art and craft workshops, education and therapy opportunities. This award will enable Garvald users to create a community garden in the grounds of the centre - a green space where opportunities in employment skills, such as gardening, maintenance and conservation, can be obtained. Presenting the award of £5,000 last Monday, Nigel Griffiths said Garvald had demonstrated superb planning for a compost and waste recycling area, a herb and vegetable patch and and area with shrubs and trees to encourage wildlife into the garden. A sheltered seating area will also be installed for its users to take a well-earned break from their gardening!
